FUNDRAISING AND DONATIONS
I have a a few sewing machines and I can design apparel. I also have a Doctorate in Biochemistry and whilst Biochemical research is the basis of Medicine, I have felt useless as I am not a Physician and cannot practise Medicine. I can make face masks and use what I know about transmission of infection to do the best I can.
GoFundMe
I asked a local hospital for their requirements for face masks: at least 750 thread count fabric, cotton, pocket for filters and ties. So that's what I did. Looking into sources for high thread count fabric it was not so easy. Fabric stores don't know the thread count of their fabrics. Manufacturers of sheets, however, do.
The design I drew up most efficiently utilizes the fabric from a king sized sheet set. The fitted sheet is used for bias cut the ties. Pillow cases and the flat sheet are used to cut the body of the mask. Around 62 face masks can be made from one sheet set. Only brand new fabric is used.
But sheets cost quite a bit of money. So I set up a GoFundMe page to try to raise $1000.
$1000 was reached surprisingly and beautifully quite quickly. Further donations from other sources of over $200 just from my beautiful friends! I can't thank them enough.
